About
The focus of my paintings has been sky studies. It is the smooth, graceful movement of the clouds across the sky, and their contrast against earthly objects, which fascinates me. I also enjoy the spontaneous nature of Monotype printing; with the free exploration of pure color and form it inspires in me. During the pandemic my paintings were representative of dreams, and flights of fancy where anything is possible and answers to complex problems are easy. They depict children, on their own in a complex world, often invisible, and caught in conflict with the resulting loss of identity, and impact on society. After a recent move to Whidbey Island Washington, I have returned to the sky painting the fascinating fog and dark skies I have come to love.
I work in oils on canvas with a painting medium that is a modern version of the old Maroger formula used by the Masters, including Turner. This medium creates a soft, silky paint that seems to float on the canvas. The result is a very transparent paint film, perfect for creating luminous atmospheric layers and capturing dimensional figures. I use Gamblin oil paints and mediums and Akua Ink when Monotype printing.
After studying art at Arizona State University, I developed and taught an art exploration program for use in private schools in Phoenix. I developed a year long Art History program for use in early elementary programs during this time. In 1999 I moved to Portland, Oregon and began painting in oils full time, but then returned to teaching in 2009. Now retired, I live on Whidbey Island and spend most of my days painting, printing, gardening and sailing.
